Living rooms: Anne Tallentire’s <i>Material Distance</i>

Cultural geography has a long and fruitful tradition of working at the intersections between performance art: in this piece we build upon by considering how artistic practice can shed light on housing crisis via focus quotidian practices design. Here, Anne Tallentire’s exhibition Material Distance, which took place 2022–23 John Hansard Gallery, Southampton, UK. A conceptual artist with moving image, installation, photography, work frequently addressed issues spatial cognition, homemaking transience. Distance extends interest foregrounding size, adopting abstract forms representation – floorplans, measurements, technical drawings professionals use for determining material physical requirements domestic inhabitation. Contrasting lived experiences home, comparing constructed post-war council estates some smaller homes recently converted from industrial or retail premises, invites us to develop critical awareness dimensionality through an embodied encounter art that is relational, performative experiential.
